March 3, 2012- Apple Inc. the Cupertino, California based technology giant announced on Saturday that it has reached a milestone with 25 billion downloads in its iOS App Store. The store was launched in 2008 and at that time, no one at Apple could have imagined that figure would have been achieved, at least not so quickly.
As soon as someone downloaded the app to reach 25 billion, the company put a message on its website expressing its appreciation. The message read, “Billions of thanks, 25 times. The iOS App Store reached the 25 billion download number, thanks for helping get us there.”
The store has been hugely successful since its launch in July of 2008 thanks in part to the popularity of the Apple iPad and iPhone. Millions load apps onto these devices all across the globe.
Apple released figures this week that said there are more than 550,000 apps available in the iOS store. More than 248,000 registered developers in the United States and numerous others have created the apps across the globe. The company said it has paid $4 billion in royalties to those developers.
The downloads are at such a pace that Apple believes the 50 billion download mark will be reached in just a few years. One lucky downloader will receive a gift card of $10,000 for being the person to download the 25 billionth app. The winner has not yet been announced.
