Black Couple Told To Find Another Church For Wedding

A Negro couple were denied marriage in a Mississippi church.

July 29, 2012- A couple from Mississippi have said the church where they were hoping to be married turned them away. The young couple said the church did that because they are black. Charles Wilson and his wife Te’Andrea said they set a date and mailed the wedding invitations, but one day prior to their wedding, they were given bad news from the church’s pastor. The pastor told them that some of the members of the predominately white church had complained about a black couple getting married in their church.

The couple live in Jackson, which is nearby and say they attend their church regularly but are not members. The church’s pastor told reporters that it surprised him when a group of church members said they opposed the couple getting married at the church.

The pastor said that had never happened prior at the church and it set a new precedent. The pastor, Stan Weatherford, performed the wedding for the couple in another church. He said he preferred not to have controversy within his church, but also wanted to see the Wilson’s  get married.

One church member claims many members of his congregation are very upset the church refused to marry the couple. The member said very few members of the church congregation even knew about the wedding.
