Breaking Dawn Once Again Wins Weekend Box Office

The Muppets did quite well this week-end, raking in $42 million.

November 28, 2011- The Twilight Saga’s latest edition took in over $62 million during the long Thanksgiving weekend. The majority of people who attended movies over the long weekend enjoyed the movies they watched. However, the numbers for the holiday weekend were much lower than in previous years.

Early estimates say it was the slowest turkey day weekend for moviegoers in four years. Tickets sales overall were down 11% compared to the same weekend last year. For 2011, attendance is down 5% while box offices sales are off by 4%.

The clear winner over the weekend was Breaking Dawn. In just one week after being released, the movie has already generated over $221 million in sales. Three movies fought one another to win the interest of the young moviegoers. The Muppets took the top prize of the three and netted over $42 million. The latest Muppet movie did very well compared to previous ones that featured Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.

The other two movies the Muppets beat out were Arthur Christmas a 3-D animated holiday tale and Hugo a 3-D story about early filmmaking. Arthur Christmas grossed $17 million and Hugo took in only $15.4 million.

Critic’s favorite The Descendants, starring George Clooney earned a respectable $9.2 million in just over 400 theaters. Many feel the film will contend for an Oscar.
