July 14, 2012- Drew Brees is set to be the highest paid player in the National Football League. The New Orleans Saints quarterback has agreed to sign a five-year contract worth $100 million. The contract reportedly contains $60 million in guaranteed money.
The agreement was reached on Friday between team officials and Brees, which will pay Brees $40 million during the first year, a person close to the deal said on condition of anonymity as the contract still has not been announced publically by the Saints organization or Brees.
The Saints did announce a deal for five years had been reached with the quarterback, but details of the financial contents were not divulged. On his Twitter page, Brees posted that the deal was done and that he loved the Who Dat Nation.
Brees did not attend the teams’ offseason practices while in a hold out for a new long term deal. He now has the highest annual pay rate in the history of the NFL at $20 million. Mario Williams the Buffalo Bills’ defensive end has a contract for $100 million, but it is over six years not five.
Brees will now be reporting on time to the training camp for the Saints that opens on July 24. The season ahead for the Saints is uncertain as Sean Payton their head coach and Jonathan Vilma a linebacker have been suspended for the season due to the bounty scandal.
