
The New York Yankees finally defeated the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
September 1, 2011- The big lefthander needed a season high pitch count and 10 strikeouts to defeat the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night 5-2. The New York Yankee lefthander pitched six long innings to get the victory, just his first against Boston in five tries. The Yankees record against the Red Sox this season improved to just 3-13. Boston maintained a half-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East.
Sabathia increased his season record to 18-7 and prior to the game he was 0-4 this season against the Red Sox with a 7.30 ERA. He was 17-3 with just a 2.40 ERA against all the other teams in baseball. He gave up 10 hits and two runs in his six innings, while walking just two. Just one time in his career has he thrown more pitches than he did last night when he threw 128.
Joe Girardi, the Yankee manager, said he got two huge out when he needed them and that is vintage Sabathia. Girardi was tossed out of the game in the ninth when ace reliever Mariano Rivera hit Red Sox Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Rivera finished off the ninth inning after Girardi’s ejection to get his 35th save of the season.
