Dirk Nowitzki has led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA championship.
June 13, 2011- The Dallas Mavericks won their franchise’s first NBA title after defeating the Miami Heat 105-95 to win the best of seven series in just six games. The victory was hard earned by the team that was led by Jason Terry in scoring with 27 points as superstar forward Dirk Nowitzki did not play as well as he did in the first five games of the series. Nowitzki was named the series Most Valuable Player.
Nowitzki said he still could not believe they had won the title that they fought so hard and long for. He said the team deserved it and the entire city of Dallas deserved it. The Mavericks led at halftime by a slim margin of two points 53-51 but extended that lead to nine points at the end of three quarters and then pulled away in the fourth when Miami started to force the ball and made many turnovers.
The loss was as devastating for Miami as it was fabulous for Dallas. The Miami Heat had assembled what many thought was a championship team in the offseason last year. They acquired all-star forward Chris Bosh and superstar and some say the game’s best, LeBron James to go along with talented Dwayne Wade. Dynasties are not made overnight and the Heat will have to wait another season to see if they can take the title home.
For now the Dallas Mavericks get to enjoy their first championship and avenge the 2006 NBA final series loss to none other than the Miami Heat.
