Nash Traded By Suns To Lakers

Steve Nash has been traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

July 5, 2012- Veteran guard and two-time MVP Steve Nash was traded to the rival he has tried and tried to beat in his eight seasons playing with Phoenix. At the request of Nash, the Suns and Lakers reached an agreement to sign and trade Nash, with the Lakers using the trade exception it received after sending Lamar Odom last season to Dallas.

Nash, 38, has spent the last eight seasons in Phoenix, and was a free agent however, a sign and trade deal was necessary in order for Los Angeles to afford his salary. Nash agreed to a $27 million deal for 3 years. The Suns will get four draft picks in exchange for Nash, 2013 and 2015 first round picks and 2013 and 2014 second round picks.
Nash’s agent released a statement that said Nash and the Suns agreed to pursue a deal of sign and trade with Los Angeles because it is important for him to be near his family who will remain living in Phoenix.

At first, the Suns were apprehensive about the deal, but they learned they could get young assets for their franchise that they would otherwise not have received. Phoenix had negotiated with the New York Knicks about the same type deal. The Toronto Raptors had offered Nash a very lucrative free agent deal that he declined.
