Actor Sean Penn's work in Haiti has earned him the 2012 Peace Summit Award.
April 27, 2012- During an award ceremony for receiving an award for his humanitarian work, Sean Penn gave an emotional speech. The award was given to the Oscar award winning Penn for the hard work he has done in Haiti. He has become an important player in the efforts to help rebuild the Caribbean country ravaged by an earthquake.
On Wednesday, in his speech he urged the world community to help the island nation. The award was given by a group of Nobel Peace Prize laureates who were in Chicago.
“It is often over used, but today I trust you know how genuine it is, I am very humbled. I am standing here trembling and I love it,” said Penn after receiving the 2012 Peace Summit Award. He received the award from Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet President, who was joined by Dalia Lama and Lech Walesa the former President of Poland, on stage.
Penn has spent a lot of time and energy in his efforts to help rebuild Haiti following the devastating earthquake that rocked the tiny island nation in January of 2010. The quake flattened thousands of structures and killed over 300,000 people. It left over 1.5 million people homeless on the island.
Penn used his award speech at the World Summit for Nobel Peace Laureates to ask the world community to not forget Haiti and to invest in the future of the country.
