German authorities believe they have stopped a terrorist attack plan.
September 9, 2011- Two suspects have been arrested by authorities in Germany. With the arrests, German officials say they have thwarted a plan by terrorists. A cache of chemicals was seized as well. Two men were in custody that were suspected of buying chemicals that are used in bomb making.
Included in the investigation was the searching of two separate homes and one mosque in Berlin. The two men that were arrested had spent time at the mosque and cultural center.
Several months ago, the investigation was started and culminated with the arrest of a German citizen with Lebanese descent, on Thursday. About one hour following the first arrest, another individual, who once lived in Gaza, was also arrested.
Neither man has been charged nor have the names of the two been released by authorities. The arrests brought back to attention the focus on terrorism. This follows the German interior minister’s comments a few days ago, that over 1,000 Islamic terrorists could be living inside Germany.
Officials across the globe have been on high alert due to the approaching 10-year anniversary of the terror attacks in the United States. German authorities also are preparing for the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI who is due to make a visit in late September.
