The Apes Take Control Of The Box Office

Rise of the Planet of the Apes dominated at the box office this week-end..

August 9, 2011- The prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes, finished a surprising weekend by defeating all other movies and winning the weekend take at the box office.

The movie had not been predicted to sell anywhere near the number of ticket it did. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring James Franco grossed over $54 million domestically. Heading into its full release this weekend audience surveys from pre-release showings had projected only about $35 million in sales for the opening weekend.

Audiences and critics seemed to be very happy with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Those who went to the film and answered exit surveys gave the movie an A- average. The audience average for the surveys was 54% male.

From Friday to Saturday the sales for the movie only dropped 1% which is incredibly low and speaks of the ultimate playability of the movie said the vice president of distribution of Fox, Chris Aronson.

Internationally the movie opened in 25 markets taking in $23.5 million with the largest numbers coming from Spain where the take was $5.3 million. Sadly the other movie released by Universal over the weekend The Change Up disappointed and only took in just over $13 million which reflects poorly for a film that spent over $52 million to be produced.
